DEL MONTE MISSION:
The
mission of San Joaquin del Monte (Saint Joachim of the mount) wich
corresponded to the village of Reynosa, supported a large group
of Pinto and Tejon Indians and for long periods of time, 275 comecrudo
Indians.
The mission had no irrigation nor
was water easily procured, due to the deep and swiftly-moving water
of the Rio Grande del Norte, wich flowed nearby.
But the lowlands yielded abundant corn and grain crops. In the uninhabited
area between the coast and the Rio Grande lived more than 200 scattered
but accessible Indians and some 800 buzal, Indians who had never
had contact with the Spaniards.
