LA SAL MISSION
The
Cabezon de la Sal Mission was located near the Village of San Fernando,
where some 100 pinto and quenacamenes Indians, the majority of whom
were Christians and had settled. There was no irrigation but the land
was appropriate for grazing all kinds of cattle.
The mission demonstrates what wise
management can accomplish. It had enjoyed times of abundance, under
the government of several missionaries, when food and dress were
abundant, but there had also been times of great scarcity during
which it was virtually impossible to provide the Indians with even
a limited ration. The Indians consequently roam the
countryside communicating with the Indians of New Leon, who have
corrupted them. The Cabezon de la Sal Mission fished and gathered
salt from several lagoons located along the coast 8 leagues distant.
For this reason the possibility of
incorporating still another 200 Quedegeño and Comecrudo Indians
into the mission was considered.
