MEXICO CITY

Mexico City has been one of the largest cities in the world for several centuries now. It is formed by the Federal District and 27 suburban municipalities.

Mexico City has a long history. Its grandeur goes way back, even to the pre-Hispanic times, so much so, that when the Spaniards arrived, they considered it one of the most beautiful and most developed cities in the world.

Mexico City is the successor of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. In Nahuatl, Mexico means “the center of the moon”, and Tenochtitlan means “place of the prickly pear tree on the rock”. It was there, in the middle of the lake, that, according to the legend, Huitzilopochtli told the Mexicas they had to build their city.

Altitude: An average 8,202 feet above sea level.
