5 places to visit near Mexico City

If you’re looking for a quick getaway from the noise, traffic and stress of the city, give yourself a break! Let us give you some options for you to enjoy some days away from the chaos but really not all that far.

Tlaxcala

Just two hours away from Mexico City you can find the perfect escape. This is one of our county’s most chill and picturesque states, here you’ll find the “Conjunto Conventual de nuestra Señora de la Asunción” that was named world heritage by UNESCO in 2021.

You can also visit some museums like “Museo de Arte de Tlaxcala”, Memory Museum and “Museo Vivo de Artes y Tradiciones Populares” to name a few. Don’t forget to visit the famous Desiderio Hernandez Xochitiotzin mural in Palacio de Gobierno, he was a pupil of Diego Rivera and a friend to Frida Kahlo.

Sierra Gorda

If you are looking to connect with nature visit Sierra Gorda that offers limitless options in ecotourism, gastronomy and spectacular natural landscapes.

Inside the Sierra Gorda there is the Biosphere Reserve, an area destined for the conservation of flaora and fauna of the countrys’ own natural enrichment. You can also visit the Misiones Franciscanas also named World Heritage by UNESCO.

If you like walking around this is the place to do it because you’ll get to visit two Pueblos Magicos: Jalpan de Serra and San Joaquin. But you can also visit some other towns like Peñamiller, Pinal de Amoles, Arroyo Seco and Landa de Matamoros.

Tepoztlan

Only 45 minutes away from Mexico City you can find this Pueblo Magico that houses the Viceroyalty Museum where you can learn all the history from that time, and learn about the coronated nuns. Inside the museum you can see the Religious Art in it: paintings, sculptures, glass and more.

If you’re looking for outdoor activities visit Arcos del Sitio where you can zip line going through the old Colonial aqueduct.

Real del Monte

Just 108 kilometers from Mexico City you can find this Pueblo Magico in Pachuca, Hidalgo. Thanks to its important mining activity during Colonial times and part of the XlX century, this destination offers a mining experience to its tourists where they can learn the story of this activity, visit some non-active mines and explore the miners lifestyle back then.

Don’t forget to visit its English Pantheon where the miners bodies rest and some English characters and where you’ll find stories that seem like they came out of a Willian Shakerspear tale, like Helen May a young Enligh broad that decided to kill the man she loved and then take her own life after their parents didn’t approve of the union.

Ex hacienda de Chautla

You can find this architectural jewel just an hour and a half away, this building will take you back to England in the XlX century. To get there the tourist needs to walk through a big mirror water path and at the end they will find a little English castle from 1898.

Get to know the story with the guided tour inside the place, where you’ll get to learn more from this spot, the owners and the history it's hiding. Aside from walking through its little forest, see amazing views of the nature surrounding it. This is a story that offers a mix between history, architecture and legend.
